Perry Farm Alpacas is a small farm, owned and operated by Jen Perry, and located in Hillsborough, NC.  I have a small herd of alpacas and a growing flock of free range chickens.

I work in the medical device industry and the stresses of the typical workday had me looking for a way to change things up a bit.  When I discovered alpacas, I knew that was it – the alpaca lifestyle gets me outside and makes life truly enjoyable.

Alpaca fleece is one of the world’s softest natural fibers and is considered a luxury fiber.  Most of my alpacas’ fiber is converted into wearable alpaca products (scarves, gloves, hats) but I reserve some of it for my creative side.  The raw fleece is processed by me and, using dry and wet felting techniques, I create handmade, one-of-a-kind items for sale at the Eno River Farmers Market.  My best-selling item is my all natural alpaca fleece felted soaps.  It is soap and loofah all in one!  I offer seasonally appropriate scents throughout the year but will always have customer favorites like Cherry Almond, Lavender and Sandalwood Vanilla.

When I first got chickens, I got them to help with parasite control for the alpacas.  The White-Tailed Deer carries a parasite that can be deadly to alpacas.  My free range chickens eat those parasites, without ill effects to them, and help keep the alpacas healthy.  That’s how the flock started.  Now, I have to say that I just LOVE my chickens.  I have many different breeds and several different egg colors.  Some stay close to home (the coop) and some range all over the 11 acres – wooded and pastured.  But one thing is certain – they all come running to see me when I get home from work each day.
