Hillsborough Harvest Dinner: An Evening at the Eno River Farmers Market

The Eno River Farmers Market in historic downtown Hillsborough will host a dinner at the market house on September 11, 2010. The "Hillsborough Harvest Dinner: An Evening at the Eno River Farmers Market" will feature all locally raised products, and be cooked by market chefs.
Chefs Chris McKinley of Box Carr Farms and Dave Ramirez of Geodesic Gardens will use meat, vegetables, fruit, cheese, and baked goods from Eno River Farmers Market vendors to prepare an elegant, sit-down, farm-to-fork dinner for 60 guests. Tickets cost $40 per person.
The event, which is sponsored by the market and the Orange County Visitors Bureau, is intended to celebrate local farmers and sustainably grown foods.
The dinner will feature pasture raised meats from Fickle Creek Farm and Rogers Cattle Company; lettuce, winter squash, peppers, and tomatoes from Two Chicks Farm, Timberwood Organics, and Geodesic Gardens; a variety of goat and cow milk cheeses from Hillsborough Cheese Company; and dessert prepared by the Queen of Tartes.
Musical entertainment will be provided by the JazzTones, a Hillsborough based jazz ensemble.
Tickets are available at the Eno River Farmers Market on Saturday mornings, and must be purchased in advance.

TomatoFest
The festival will feature more than 57 varieties of tomatoes in every size, shape and color, all harvested fresh by local farmers.
Varieties include heirlooms such as Cherokee Purple, Arkansas Traveler, and Aunt Ruby's German Green as well as hybrid favorites like Better Boy and Pink Girl.
An assortment of varieties will be available for canning and sauce, as well as slicing and salad tomatoes, and dozens of varieties of cherry tomatoes.
The market will offer a tomato tasting, where customers can sample and compare over a dozen varieties. Each produce vendor will feature a favorite tomato and offer samples, as well as special information about its growing qualities and taste characteristics.
The market will provide recipes, cooking, canning and storage tips for all kinds of tomatoes.
In addition, the market vendors will have their usual abundance of fresh, local vegetables.

Slaws, Salads and Sides Cook-off At Hillsborough Hog Day
We''l grow the veggies; You make the sides! We'll taste 'em, judge 'em, give out fabulous prizes, and serve 'em up!
The Eno River Farmers Market is pleased to invite savvy cooks from all over to determine who has the BEST recipe for a SLAW, SALAD or SIDE DISH! Each contestant should make at least four quarts of a homemade, cold, vegetable side dish. Each contestant will make their entry at home and bring it to the Public Market House on June 19th by 10 am. Cook-off volunteers will serve the sides. No booth or other set up is required.
Cost to enter is $6. Contestants will receive $4 in Eno River Farmers Market coupons with entry.
Tasting is open to the public for $4 for four (4) samples. Additional samples can be purchased. In addition to the People's Choice Award (chosen by the public), a panel of judges will select First and Second Place, as well as Best Use of Local Ingredients. Each winner will receive a prize and winners names will be announced in the newspaper.

Enchantment Under the Soil
A celebration of the magic that takes place under the soil. Lots of kids activities about composting, bugs, and butterflies. Kids can learn about all the creepy crawly things that make organic gardening possible. For adults there will be composting demonstrations and instructions for butterfly gardening, as well as recipes and cooking demos for cooking with root crops, onions, and potatoes.
